The National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum was founded in 1955 and opened to the public in 1960, the result of a group of philanthropic, civic leaders in Oklahoma City who wanted to provide a space to adequately honor and celebrate the culture of the American cowboy and the settlement of the West.
