The Village, OK

The Village, Oklahoma, is the capital of Oklahoma County and is located in the center of the state. The population of the city is 11,436, making it one of the largest cities in the state. The Village was founded on October 14, 1892, and served as a small agricultural community. The city was named after the Creek Indian “Village” who lived in the area. The city is rich in history. It was once a stagecoach line hub and has been home to many different cultures, including Choctaw, Chickasaw, and Creek Indians. The city was also home to a large African American population until the Great Migration during the early 20th century. Today, The Village is the economic engine of Oklahoma County. The city’s prime location near Interstate 44, the Turner Turnpike, and several major highways led to increased activity and commerce. Major businesses located in the city include Microsoft, Quiktrip, Bell Helicopter, and Southwest Airlines. The city is home to several major cultural attractions, including the Oklahoma City Zoo, the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum, the Oklahoma City National Memorial, the Oklahoma City Botanical Garden, the Myriad Botanical Gardens, the Oklahoma History Center, and the Museum of Osteology.
